Meet Buchanan Bear

We call him Buckie!

He lives inside a tiny tree trunk and he accompanies me to every campfire.

He's a bit shy.

Sitting around the campfire.jpg

There is something very special about the comfort and friendship that happens when friends and family gather around a campfire. Sitting on lawn chairs, or atop big logs, circling a warm, bright, campfire that's crackling and a bit smoky is a big part of our Canadian culture! Story-telling, roasting marsh-mellows and singing, quickly become part of the event.

As a young girl of 12, I attended overnight camp  and was quickly recruited to be the guitar player to lead the campers in campfire songs over many summers from 1969 through to 1975.

These are some of my most cherished childhood memories.

Later we would carry on the campfire tradition with our own three children, Erik, Jennifer and Kimberley, cottaging near Kettle Point with our dear friends Alec and Sandy and their three kids Johna, Neal and Nick. It was there that we ended every fun-filled beach day with the biggest bonfire ever and it came with the expectation that I would have my guitar with me. The songs and the singing would always happen!

I long for those moments all year through!

Singing around a campfire is an old tradition. Sooner or later everyone joins in. Campfire songs help build friendships, camaraderie, rich camping spirit and great memories!

But to get everyone singing together, you have to pick the right songs. Most camp songs for kids are ones that children already know and have a repetitive chorus. "Repeat After Me" camp songs are popular. Sometimes the leader of the group calls out a line from the song and the rest of the group repeats it back.  It's just great fun for everyone! Many songs are interactive and require participants to contribute to a verse. It's easy! It's fun! It teaches them to take turns; and it helps them learn rhythms. The best take-away is that they increase their vocabulary as they learn new words as they build confidence!
